Which area of Ohrid is best?
For a first trip, stay in the old town. You can walk to the Church of St. Sophia, St. John at Kaneo, the boardwalk and the harbor, and the best food we had was in the side streets away from the busy square. The trade-off is hills: the streets are steep, cobbled and full of stairs, and parking is tight.
If you'd rather skip the hills, stay along the lakefront promenade east of the old town. It's a flat walk into the center along the water, and you'll find bigger hotels there too.
Where we stayed: Villa Elena - Dolni Saraj
We stayed at Villa Elena - Dolni Saraj in the old town and paid $140 for two nights. We'd stay again:
- Location: a very short walk to coffee and food, and about 5 to 8 minutes on foot to the main strip by the harbor.
- Better food nearby: you're surrounded by more affordable, better restaurants away from the busy square.
- Parking: great parking, which matters in Ohrid's narrow old town streets.
- The view: red rooftops, the lake and the mountains, right from the villa.
