Bitola is North Macedonia's second-largest city and one of our favorite stops in the country. We spent a day here on the drive from Skopje to Lake Ohrid and gave it a 10 out of 10 for the food, the prices and the friendly locals. This guide covers exactly how we spent the day, where we ate and stayed and what it all cost.

Is Bitola worth visiting?

Yes. Bitola has a completely different feel from Skopje and Ohrid: an elegant old town centered on one long pedestrian street, Širok Sokak, lined with neoclassical buildings, cafes and consulates. Known as the city of consuls, Bitola hosted consulates of France, Britain, Russia and Austria-Hungary in the 1800s.

What made it a 10 out of 10 for us was the people and the food. Everyone we met was friendly, our hotel owners went out of their way to help, and the food was great and cheap. If you're driving between Skopje and Lake Ohrid, give Bitola a full day.

How should you spend one day in Bitola?

Here's how we'd spend one day in Bitola, built from our own day there:

  1. Morning: coffee and a pastry at Broadway Bakery on Širok Sokak, for about $2 to $3 total.
  2. Late morning: walk the length of Širok Sokak, from Magnolia Square toward City Park, and people-watch from a cafe.
  3. Treat yourself: a beauty treatment at Aura Beauty Center. Megan got a lash lift for 1,000 denars (about $18).
  4. Lunch: a long lunch at Food Republic, our best meal in Bitola, for about $25 for two.
  5. Dinner: pizza and pasta at Ravenna Pizza Bar, a few minutes from Širok Sokak, for about $20 for two.

What are the best things to do in Bitola?

These are the things we did ourselves.

1. Walk Širok Sokak

Širok Sokak is the heart of Bitola and where you'll spend most of your time. The pedestrian street runs about 910 meters (3,000 feet) from Magnolia Square to City Park, lined with neoclassical buildings, cafes, shops, consulates and the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. It's busy with locals all day, and the outdoor cafes are made for slow coffee and people-watching.

2. Get a beauty treatment at Aura Beauty Center

Megan got her eyelashes lifted at Aura Beauty Center, about 10 steps from our hotel, for only 1,000 denars (about $18), much cheaper than at home in Florida, and it came out amazing. They also do lash extensions, brow lamination, hydrafacials, microneedling, body treatments and more, so it's an easy, affordable treat while you're in town.

3. Start the day at Broadway Bakery

Our first stop in Bitola. Broadway Bakery sits right on Širok Sokak, and the prices are hard to beat: $1 to $2 for a coffee and about $1 for a pastry. We had a cappuccino and a sugar-dusted pastry filled with fruit.

What else is worth adding to a Bitola trip?

We didn't get to these on this trip, but they're the top sights around Bitola if you have more time.

Heraclea Lyncestis

Founded by Philip II of Macedon in the 4th century BC, the ancient city of Heraclea Lyncestis sits about 2 km south of the center. It's known for its early Christian floor mosaics, including one that appears on the 5,000-denar banknote, and a Roman theatre.

Pelister National Park

Established in 1948, Pelister is North Macedonia's oldest national park, rising above Bitola to 2,601 meters. It's known for the endemic Macedonian pine, called molika locally, and two glacial lakes at about 2,200 meters.

Where should you eat in Bitola?

These are the places we ate at ourselves, plus one we'd try next time.

Food Republic: our best meal in Bitola

A 10 out of 10. Food Republic is a couple of minutes' walk from Širok Sokak, with a cozy courtyard dining room under a glass roof with ivy on the stone walls. We had a Skopsko beer, a phyllo pastry baked with cheese and topped with sesame seeds and honey, an amazing tagliatelle with meat sauce and a water, for about $25 for the two of us.

Ravenna Pizza Bar: great pizza and pasta for dinner

We were craving pizza for dinner, and Ravenna was really good. It's close to our hotel and stays open later than a lot of places in Bitola. We had a pepperoni pizza, spaghetti, a coffee and a Coke for about $20 for the two of us.

Slice Pizza: on our list for next time

We walked past Slice Pizza and it looked incredible. We didn't get to eat there this trip, but it's at the top of our list for our next visit to Bitola.

Where should you stay in Bitola?

Stay on or right next to Širok Sokak so everything is walkable. We stayed at Robevski Luxury Rooms, right on Širok Sokak, and it was a 10 out of 10:

  • The owners: incredibly kind. They upgraded us to their luxury suite, their best room and the one they offer for honeymoons, for free.
  • Price: we paid $61 for their second-best room. Their cheaper rooms were around $40.
  • Location: right on Širok Sokak, steps from cafes, restaurants and Aura Beauty Center.
  • Parking: free parking. It's a little confusing to find at first, but the owner drove with me to show me where to park, which made it easy.

How do you get to Bitola?

Bitola sits in southern North Macedonia, close to the Greek border:

  • From Skopje: about 170 km (106 miles), around 2 hours 40 minutes by car. Buses and trains take about 3.5 hours. This is the drive we did.
  • From Ohrid: about 69 km (43 miles), around 1 hour 15 minutes by car.

The easiest route is to combine all three: Skopje, then Bitola, then Lake Ohrid. We did it by car, which gave us the freedom to stop wherever we wanted. See our North Macedonia travel guide for the full route.

For flights, the closest international airports are Ohrid (OHD), about an hour away, and Skopje (SKP). We use Skyscanner for every trip because we only care about the best price, not the airline, and it compares every airline in one search.

Is Bitola expensive?

No, Bitola was one of the best-value stops of our whole trip. It uses the Macedonian denar (MKD), about 55 denars to $1 in October 2026. These are real prices from our day there:
