North Macedonia is one of the best-value countries we've traveled: a lively capital, a charming old city and one of Europe's clearest lakes, all within a few hours' drive. We spent about 10 days here in October 2026. This page covers our route, what things cost and everything to know before you go, with a full guide for each stop.

Our North Macedonia guides

What is the best North Macedonia itinerary?

This is the route we drove, and it's the easiest way to see the country's three highlights:

  1. Skopje (2 days): the Old Bazaar, Macedonia Square and a day trip to Matka Canyon.
  2. Drive to Bitola (about 2 hours 40 minutes, 1 day): coffee and food on Širok Sokak, the elegant main street.
  3. Drive to Lake Ohrid (about 1 hour 15 minutes, 2 to 3 days): St. John at Kaneo, the semi-submarine and lakeside cafes.

Most international flights arrive in Skopje (SKP), and Ohrid (OHD) also has an airport, so you can fly into one and out of the other. We find our flights on Skyscanner, which compares every airline in one search.

How do you get around North Macedonia?

We rented a car, which made it easy to combine Skopje, Bitola and Ohrid and stop wherever we wanted. Pick a smaller car: old town streets, especially in Ohrid, are narrow and stressful in a big one. Ask your hotel about parking; in Bitola our hotel owner drove with us to show us where to park. Buses also connect all three cities if you'd rather not drive.

What should you know before visiting North Macedonia?

  • Visa: U.S. citizens don't need one for stays up to 90 days within six months. You need travel medical insurance, and your hotel registers you with the police within 48 hours.
  • Money: the Macedonian denar (MKD). Cards work at most hotels and restaurants; carry cash for bakeries and small cafes.
  • Safety: U.S. State Department Level 1, Exercise Normal Precautions (updated September 10, 2026).
  • Plugs: European two-pin plugs at 230 volts.
  • Language: Macedonian, written in Cyrillic; English is common in cafes, hotels and restaurants in the main cities.

June to September is best for swimming in Lake Ohrid. We visited in October, which was quieter, cheaper and full of fall colors, though the lake was too cold to swim comfortably.
