Fira or Oia is the big question when booking Santorini. We spent 4 nights and 5 days on the island in October 2026, visited both, and Fira won by far: better food, great caldera views and a feel that made it feel like home. Here's how they compare, from our own trip.

Why did we choose Fira over Oia?

We spent most of our 4 nights and 5 days in Fira, and it was our favorite part of Santorini. It felt like home. Here's why:

  • The food: our favorite gyros on the island was at Good Mood Food for 4.80 euros, the best loukoumades were at La Petite for 4 euros, and China Famous Foods was a great change from Greek food.
  • The views: Fira sits right on the caldera rim, with the volcano in front of you.
  • A crowd-free viewpoint: at the entrance of Athina Aperto Suites, a few seconds down the stairs, there was no one else there in October.
  • It's central: Fira is the island's capital, so it's easy to reach Kamari, Oia and the rest of the island from there.

What is Oia like?

Oia is the village at Santorini's northern tip and the island's most famous sunset spot, which also makes it the busiest. We only went to Oia at night, when the village lights up along the cliff, and we went for the food: Phyllon was our favorite bakery on the island, and Pitogyros Traditional Grill House next door is open very late (they gave us 10% off at Phyllon). It's worth an evening, but we wouldn't base ourselves there.

What about Kamari?

If you'd rather be by the beach and away from the caldera crowds, Kamari is a low-key town on the east coast with a long black sand beach. It's not that touristy, prices were great, and our lattes at Harinero Bakery right on the water were about $1.70 each.

Where did we actually stay?

We stayed at Magma Resort, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, in Vourvoulos, and spent our days in Fira. We had a rental car, which made it easy to get between the hotel, Fira, Kamari and Oia. Our Amex Platinum hotel credits brought a $1,600 stay down to about $300 out of pocket. Here's exactly how that worked.

FAQ

Is Fira or Oia better to stay in?

For us, Fira. It's the capital, it has caldera views, the best food we found on the island and a lived-in feel that made it feel like home. We visited Oia for its bakery and grill house but liked Fira much more as a base.

Is Fira more affordable than Oia?

In our experience Fira had plenty of affordable food: our favorite gyros was 4.80 euros and loukoumades were 4 euros. Oia is the island's most famous sunset village and its busiest spot at sunset.

How far is Oia from Fira?

Oia is at the northern tip of Santorini. The caldera trail between Fira and Oia is about 10 km (6 miles) and takes roughly 3 to 5 hours on foot. We had a rental car, which made it easy to drive up for an evening.

Can you see the sunset from Fira?

Yes. Fira faces the caldera to the west, so you get sunset views over the water and the volcano. Our favorite viewpoint was at the entrance of Athina Aperto Suites, and in October we had it to ourselves.

Where should you stay if you want something quieter than Fira?

Kamari, a low-key beach town on the east coast about 8.6 km from Fira. It's not that touristy and prices were great overall.
