Our 4-night stay at Magma Resort Santorini, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, would have cost about $1,600. With the hotel credits on our two Amex Platinum cards, we paid about $300 out of pocket. Here's how the credit works, the perks we got and where else the card helped on our honeymoon.

How did the Amex Platinum cut our hotel bill?

Megan and I both have the American Express Platinum. Magma Resort Santorini, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, is part of Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts, so we booked it prepaid through Amex Travel and used the hotel credits on both of our cards.

  • Without Amex: about $400 a night in the off-season, or $1,600 for our 4 nights.
  • What we paid: about $300 out of pocket in total.

The credit, per American Express: up to $300 in statement credits twice a year (January to June and July to December) on prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings made through Amex Travel. Terms change, so check the current details before you book.

Did the card help anywhere else?

Yes, with our rental car. We rented through Sixt for 167 euros (about $185) and skipped Sixt's expensive insurance, using the car rental coverage that comes with the Amex Platinum instead. It's secondary coverage for theft of and damage to the rental car when you pay with the card and decline the rental company's collision damage waiver. It doesn't cover liability, and some countries and vehicles are excluded, so read your benefit terms first.

The card's annual fee and welcome offer change over time, so compare them on the American Express site against how much you travel. We're not financial advisors. This is simply what worked for us.
